Year 10 Market day

On Monday, two classes of Year 10 Business students participated in Market Day. They have worked hard all semester putting together a formal Business Plan to ensure they have the knowledge and know-how to run a successful enterprise.

They also had to complete ‘The Pitch’ to a member of the Principal Team to finalise proceedings. Money will be raised for a variety of charities – from the Heart Foundation, the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the Make a Wish Foundation, the Royal Flying Doctors, the Salvation Army, Diabetes Australia and State School’s Relief.  Students will be measuring their success against criteria set in the plan.

Students have gained many new skills since commencing this hands-on approach to learning. Notably, the ability to work alongside each other in a team environment; and the need for strong communication skills in both a written and verbal context. Students were required to delegate effectively to ensure all work was completed by the due date and they had to interpret and analyse market research data. Financial knowledge was key in keeping costs down and when deciding on pricing strategies. And visual learners were able to tap into their creativity with regards to packaging and logo creation.

Market Day is embedded culturally into the Year 10 Business course here at McKinnon Secondary College as it provides an excellent opportunity for students to engage themselves in a meaningful hands-on project that presents real-life challenges. Good luck to all of this semester’s participants!

Yours in Business,

Mrs Kate Jobson and Mr John Rorke
