Once again, McKinnon's year
7 and 8 students theatrically celebrated the lives and achievements of
notable historical
people. This year, the hosts were Lauren Winberg and Carly Copolov, Year
7 were Scientists and Mathematicians, and
Year 8 were Entertainers, sports people, artists
or 'fashionistas'.
It was an entertaining night.
BACKGROUND The Night of the Notables is an annual event held in the school hall during
Term 1 or Term 2. All students from Year 7 ELMS are involved and any students
from Year 8 can volunteer to take part in the program. Each student picks
a notable person from the past or present to research and present in an
award-style evening.
PREPARATION
They choose someone who they think is special and try to present their
findings in a fun and interesting way. The students are allowed to work
in pairs if they wish to. Year 7 students must select a notable scientist
or mathematician, and Year 8 students select any other notable person throughout
history. Each week, the students meet with their staff mentor to discuss
how they are going and the staff try to help them present the notable in
an interesting way. Each student has a presentation area consisting of
a large board (approx 1m x 2m), two tables and chairs, of which they need
to fill with interesting information and props. Students are to prepare
a set of questions which must include some ‘Open-Ended Questions’ (deeper
questions).
THE PRESENTATION EVENING
The evening starts with all parents, family and friends seated for the
presentation of each notable, who are announced as they walk down the aisle.
The presentation is followed by several performances and awards for notables
that have made an exceptional contribution to society. The audience are
then asked to move around the hall to look at each of the presentation
areas and ask each notable a range of questions. The evening has a great
atmosphere of learning, excitement and fun.
