On the 2nd of May, McKinnon held its second carnival for the year.  Students put on their footy gear, whether it be AFL, soccer or rugby, and ran, jogged or walked the course. Josh Ricketson of year 11 took the honours in the blue ribbon event, winning the open boys 5km in a time of 17.20 minutes, with Maddie Begala (also from year 11) winning the 3km open event for the girls. The top 15 runners in each age group now go on to represent the school at the Beachside District championship, held on Friday, the 25th of May.

On the house front, Monash took the honours and won their fifth carnival in succession, having already won the swimming carnival this year and all three carnivals last year. They won by a close 137 points over Flynn, with Gilmore coming third and the 2005 winners Chisholm coming fourth. With the athletics carnival not until term 3 this year, students from the other three houses will need to get into some early training if they wish to stop the domination of “Team Green”!!!

With the help of some fine weather and an excellent sound system supplied by the music department, the carnival was a huge success. Students even had “Bruce McAveney” style commentary to greet them on their arrival down the finishing straight, after completing the course!!!

Congratulations to all students who participated, especially those who are not such keen runners but still get into the spirit of the occasion and give it a go each year. A huge thank you must go to all the staff that helped out on the day – the smooth running of the event would not occur if it wasn’t for staff members carry out their job so efficiently.

Good luck to all the runners competing in the next round – Go McKinnon!!!
