French...
- is spoken in, or is a major cultural heritage, in 44 countries, which
together make up a quarter of the worlds nations
- is spoken in the Pacific region (New Caledonia, Polynesia)
- is an official international language used in organisations and
events such as the United Nations, International Red Cross and the Olympic Games
- opens the door to knowledge of Frances contemporary
advancements in technology, the wine industry, the arts, cosmetics, fashion, the culinary
and restaurant industry
- is a stepping stone to being able to learn other Romance languages
more easily such as Italian, Spanish and Portuguese
- is an enjoyable way of appreciating and benefiting from a rich world
culture

French had a strong influence on English in the past.
Speakers of
English can recognise many French words, because they came into English from French. They
often sound a bit different, but look very familiar. Here is a list of French words:
