Year 11 students investigating sound wave transmission using tin can phones.

One topic in Unit 1 Physics is the study of waves. Students design their own investigation into what factors allow the best transmission of sound through these ‘phones’. Using simple materials brought from home as well as more precise sound generating and metering equipment supplied by the school, the Year 11s identified which components made the best phones.

Initially some thought the idea was a little childish but they soon were eagerly engaged. Who says mobile phones aren’t allowed in school !?!
