McKinnon Sport Philosophy
To provide an enjoyable quality sporting programme whereby coaches and students interact to assist students physical, social and emotional development through a wide range of sports.
Through sport we aim to provide the opportunity for:
Physical fitness
Our sports provide students with the opportunity to develop the nine componments of fitness: aerobic fitness, flexibility, muscular strength, endurance, speed, power, balance, agility and co-ordination. Girls and boys are encouraged to achieve their full physical potential through the varied sports offered.
School spirit
We encourage our students to develop an enthusiastic approach to our school sports teams and to take pride and enjoyment from representing and supporting our school in interschool events.
Sportsmanship
An understanding of the rules, playing etiquette, and a respect for the codes of conduct as outlined by the VSSSA are paramount to the growth of our students both on and off the field.
Personal achievement
All individuals under the care of our coaches will have the opportunity to achieve relative success and enjoy their involvement in their selected sport.
Self discipline
Boys and girls are given the opportunity to practise self discipline in the context of sport.
Individual involvement
Students choose from a broad selection of sports that cater for individual ability, skill level and interest.
Self esteem
Coaches create a positive and supportive environment to enable students to feel good about themselves and their involvement in sport.
Staff student interaction
Our sports programme provides the opportunity for students and staff to relate to each other in a positive way outside the classroom. This is based on mutual respect and understanding.
Teamwork
We offer students the camaraderie, enjoyment and success that can be attained from playing in a team.
Leadership
Students are encouraged to participate in a leadership role in the sports area including: House captains, team captains, coaches, referees and other official duties.
