CHEERIOS

13 August 2008 - Hello, my name is Peter Masterson and I was in the HSC class of 1980. I only have really kept in contact with one good mate, Ross Deam, but I recognise a lot of the names mentioned on this site. I always wondered what happened to Sandra Cook, Scott Nutt, Frank Ulm, Michael Goldwaser, Stephen Burman, Geoff Ng and Andrew Kay. Since leaving high school I worked for the SECV for almost 7 years and then moved to the South Coast of NSW and I am one of the Managers at a local council. Did a Business Degree and at present doing some postgraduate study. Have been married for 22 years and have two teenage daughters. I am still a keen Saints supporter waiting for that elusive premiership. I enjoyed my last couple of years at high school, but not the early days. Family all still live in the East Bentleigh area and I try to get home at least a couple of times a year. Regards, Peter Masterson. peter.masterson AT shellharbour DOT nsw.gov.au
23 July 2008 - Hi, my name is Rob Sklarski. I commenced at M.H.S. in 1983 and finished VCE in 1988. I used to play Trombone in the Senior Band up until Year 11. I live in Perth, WA now and have been living here for the last 12 years. My brother Adam also went to M.H.S and finished his VCE in 1991. He still lives in Melbourne and has a computer shop around the corner in East Bentleigh. He tells me that he heard my name was on a list of missing people from the class reunion list. If anybody knows something about this, I'd love to hear from you. Cheers. robs AT ksap DOT com.au
14 July 2008 - Hi my name is Sandra Weeden.  I commenced at McKinnon High School in 1955.  Would love to catch up with anyone from that era. Cheers, Sandra. sandraweeden AT bigpond DOT com

I was great friends with Lisa Trichter and some of the boys who came from the Catholic school in year 8. My sister libby was a couple of years ahead of me. Would like to hear from old school friends.

19 Sept 07 - vincent AT sains DOT com.my -

Hi. Its Vincent Ho, writing you from Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia. I attended McKinnon for a year in 1978 and after that went on to do a degree in Computer Science in Melbourne U. I left Australia in 1982 and came back home and has been "stuck" in Kuching ever since. No complains - Kuching is a great city.

In the local language, "Kuching" means cats - strange but I seem to notice only normal population of cats here - maybe in the past there were many more? Anyway, I posted a Cheerio last year 17 May and guess what? Chris Theodor, my classmate saw it and we are now in touch! Thank you Chris for making the effort to get in touch, in case you are reading this.

My problem is I seem to have a porous memory and information like names of classmates of 78 seem to have long leaked away. So anyone of you with better memories and wanting to get in touch with me - please do so! Cheerio and best regards, Vincent Ho Class of 78

Hi fellow ex-students, I was at McKinnon (then High Schoo) during the mid seventies. Class mates were Todd Smith, Sue Williams, Fiona Romundt, Michelle Cadday, Lauren, Phillip K., Mark Dupe, Murray & heaps more that I cant think of at the moment.

I had older brothers Brett & Paul that went there too. Brett sent me a thistletonian at one stage, but usual apathetic self didnt respond. I went to my wife's reunion a few year ago & enjoyed it. Therefore If there is one coming up soon I would like to come. Now living on the NSW North Coast.

Just a quick "Hello", and thank you for providing a contact point for old school friends. In some cases we're very old unfortunately!
I was at the school from 1962-1966, and was thrilled when a relative alerted me to Marjorie's message on the website. We were reunited in January 2007 after 42 years, and I'm pleased to say we've had a great time catching up on those lost years ever since. So many times we lived or worked just up the road from each other, yet somehow missed out on making contact.
I would love to be involved in the reunion but not sure where I fit as I repeated Form 3 in 1965 then went on to Form 4.

14 May 2007 from Andrew.Metcalfe AT ap.mccann DOT com

This message comes from Beijing. I accidentally came upon a message from Michael Richards and had to respond.

I spent just one year at the then, McKinnon High School…1971.After six years in unrewarding employment it was an important year.I turned 22 that year…a dinosaur compared to the vast majorityof my fellow students.

Fond memories persist of Michael; Julie Foster; Geoff Tobin; Frank Rutherford;Merle van der Weyden (the finest teacher I ever encountered); Alan Stubbs; the Irvingsisters and Mervyn Dennehy.

I hope you have all been as fortunate as I, in that my time at McKinnon was pivotal in setting me up fora rich and rewarding life.

Hi everyone. I attended Mckinnon High School between 1961 and 1964. My sister and I recently attended the class of 1966 re-union and we really enjoyed it. I didn’t find any one from my first form though, which was 1D. I would dearly love to contact Evelyn Westen, who was at the school around the same time, maybe a year behind me. If any one would like to contact me, please do so.

message: G'day, I taught mainly English at McKinnon in 1978-80. I remember especially the year 8s and 9s at that time, but I did teach HSC English as well. I'm now retired (reluctantly). I left McKinnon to work in the unions in 1980, and spent 15 years as an academic at University of Southern Queensland for most of that time (12 years) and then part-time (mainly at Griffith University) until I had to give it up. I remember my short time at McKinnon HS fondly and would love to hear from former students and colleagues from those days. I now live on the Sunshine Coast Cheers

message: I was at the school 1968-73. We were the first year of Victorian students to do Drama as a year 11 subject, and I think perhaps we were the first group of students to do what was called "Social Studies" as a year 12 subject. It was basically about Australian politics, and was really interesting in the year 1973, with Whitlam coming to power! Mr smith really brought it all alive for those of us like myself who had previously never given politics a thought.I would love to hear from Eve Mesley, who was my best buddy in year 12. She was living in Murrumbeena and teaching at Caulfield High when i last saw her (about 22 years ago.)We all loved drama so much at school that 8 of us all went to become drama teachers at Melbourne State college, but I think I'm probably the only one of the 8 who is still teaching, and loving it MOST OF THE TIME.The hilarious thing is that we all thought "Gee, being in school plays is GREAT FUN. I'll go and be a drama teacher," but we didn't stop to think that it's the KIDS who have all the fun, NOT THE TEACHERS! I have 4 gorgeous children aged from 27-16, all working in various crazy bush locations except for the youngest who is away at boarding school. We live in an appalling but appealing tin shed in the absolute middle of nowhere.A great life- how anybody could stay in Bentleigh for a lifetime just astounds me.

message: I have just moved to Brisbane and found an old invitation to last years class reunion for the class of 1960. Unfortunately I couldn't get to Melbourne for the reunion as I was living in Sydney at the time and had other work matters to attend to at that time. I thought that I would have a look at the school web site and I was quite amazed to see pictures of the classes of 1958 and all those faces from the past brought back many memories. It does not seem possible that this is getting up towards nearly 50 years ago and if there was to be another reunion in the future I would certainly like to attand. If there are any people still around who were part of that era I would certainly like to hear from them.

message: I discovered this site by accident, it's a trip down memory lane. I was in the class of 1980 and recognise some of the names on this page and a few faces in the photos of the 1980 reunion photos elsewhere on this site. I am just trying to remember the names of my teachers...Mr Burns (Maths) Mr Langdon (English) Mrs Peterffy (History). Of course there were others... Ms Blight, Mrs Bacon, Mrs Kadar. I became a teacher myself briefly, until I realised what a tough gig it is.
I live in Sydney now, and travel a lot, but family live nearby so I drive by the school every now and then. I don't know about high school being the best years of my life, but they were certainly formative years. And the music was better then :-)

We plan to catch up eventually (gee time flies). My parents who are both still alive thought Kevin was just lovely, think it had something to do with his Father being a Minister!!!! KEVIN SEEMED TO BE ALWAYS IN TROUBLE AT SCHOOL (JUST LIKE ME!!) Yvonne Rayner and myself also caught up recently which was good, don't think we had seen each other for about 30 years or more!!!!

Didn't make the Reunion Sat night but hope those who attended had a ball. Reading back through messages I saw a teacher called Jim Lewis mentioned and was wondering if he was the same Jim Lewis who taught my two sons at Woodleigh in Baxter some years back. Jim was involved withthe School Plays and a Drama Teacher so seems likely they are one and the same. And, yes Clive Moore I remember you and one of these days when I have some time I will send you an email. My husband & I moved back to Bentleigh in 2001 and I often find myself looking at faces when in Centre Road to see if I recognise anyone, but alas no I don't seem to. Anyway thanks for making this page available for us "oldies".

This is a bit of an unusual one, but I thought I'd add it anyway...

Roger Balmer redback9 at iprimus DOT com DOT au September 13, 2004 at 18:40:35 The 50th anniversary day was a well organised event and I was surprised by the good turn up. Obviously Jenni Cook was involved in the running and deserves a medal for her work & committment in making ex students reunions succesful, and in particular this day. I met my ex sweetheart (Barbara) from 1961/2 which made my day, and she was, and still is, a lovely lady. Please pass on my congratulations to all those involved !
Gary Watts garywatts at bigpond DOT com DOT au September 13, 2004 Thanks for a great day and especially to the class of '66! My apologies to those classmates I missed catching up with in particular Bronwyn and Annette - hope life is treating you well. I spent so much time talking to old friends that I even ran out of time to fully inspect the school.
Colin Power powtraf at relax DOT com DOT au September 12, 2004 The 50th Anniversary day is something I will never forget. It was so good to meet so many mature adults that I hadn't seen since I was a teenager. Great to see you again Marjorie,Philip, Kaye,Ross, and so many others. Also wonderful to see Ray Martin looking so well. Disappointing to see so many of the original "portable" classrooms as permanent fixtures, and a bit the worse for wear [as we all are]. Anyway, it was a lovely day, and I enjoyed seeing you all.

It's great to read the messages and recall the people. I think that Ken Jewell was in the cadets (I've written a short note to Pam D about my recollections of cadet days of 1959). On footy, I remember that Robert Hotson had a mean punt kick and I also recall being run down on a frequent basis by the likes of Gary Edwards and Garry Hannan and Algy Vaisutis and the rest of the big kids in 'kick-to-kick' in the school grounds. Unfortuntely I won't be able to attend the 50th celebs but hope it goes well for you all.
Mark Dickinson madman at primus DOT com DOT au September 05, 2004. Hi To all ex-students of Macca High. I did a 4 year stint from 1976 to 1979, gee was it really that long ago! They were 4 magnificent years, the only students i still see regularly ar the Treagers. I will be at the 50 year open day on Sunday and am looking forward immensely to meeting any old school friends. My father was right... they were the best years of my life...
Marlene Logan (nee Thomas) marlene.logan at aca.gov DOT au August 23, 2004 Sorry I am unable to attend the big 50th Celebration. I was a second year student so remember the early days very well. Ho hum! As I lost my watch in the grass in the vicinity of where the big hall now stands, I was the cause of a peacock parade. Luckily the watch was found. Mr Channon, the first headmaster, didn't stay very long as he retired. He was followed by Mr Pepper who left not too long after I finished in 1959. I shifted back to WA in June 1960 and have lived in WA since (though I married a Queenslander). Are there any others who now reside in WA? If so, get in touch. We may be able to have a WA Chapter. Will be thinking of you all and wishing you well.

Did HSC in 1975, still remember the fun times and wonder if anyone else from '75 is out there ... Did English, Accounting, Australian History and Legal - dumped Economics as was too boring ... (Whatever happened to Mrs Brown?) Oh well, if you can remember me, drop me an email. :-)

Hi to all of the class of 1960. Robert Hotson inspired me to also put in a message. After reading his note names came back to me…..Brown, Stone, Parkinson, Sutton, Williams, Warboys, Giles, Lucas and of course Prebyn Hundle, who could forget the teachers response when he wore the first iridescent sox to school…. What are you? A Canary? Where are they now? Hope to see you in September.

Hi, Are there any 1973 graduates out there??? We must have a 30 year reunion this year some time and would like to see how you are all holding together. Drop me a line.

This site brings back some memories. Was in 1980 class and recognised names Andrew Dickens and Paul Cochrane. Also went to Valkstone PS. Went to the 1990 reunion. Some buddies throughout Macca years were Scott Cummins, Craig Feather (met by accident 3 years ago), Wayne Green and Peter Midas. Currently living in Sydney. I contributed to design of 1980 Thistle cover. Recalled the 1980 class spent our break up at Quat Quatta reception in Glen Iris and had a BBQ breakfast on banks of Yarra to celebrate completion of HSC exams. Wondered where everyone's gone?

October 25, 2002 Student at McK High in the early to mid 60's. I don't suppose for a moment this will result in a deluge of emails or contacts but it would be pretty interesting if someone did. On leaving school in '66 I did an engineering apprenticeship before, in the early '70's, with a few friends "visiting" England and Western Europe. I have lived in England almost continuously ever since! Some visit! While living in London I married Jill from Dorset in SW England and in early '78 we visited Melbourne returning to England just before Christmas 1980. We then lived in Sussex (Southern England) for the next 7 years and raised 2 children - Stephen and Emma. In 1988 we moved to West Dorset to take over Jill's parents small farm following their retirement. We have been there ever since. The farm is more of a hobby than serious business proposition (you would be mad to depend on farming for an income). It is our idyll and we couldn't imagine living anywhere else. We have a menagerie of around 20 Jacob sheep - excellent for their meat, a few horses (Emma rides a lot as does Jill on occasions), 2 very aged donkeys, 2 cats and a Dalmatian dog. Apart from that we both work together in a small local software business - as employees now. We were once owners/partners but sold it a few years ago to give it a more positive future.

Now an architect based in Currumbin Queensland. Over the years I seem to keep running into ex-McKinnon High students; it's quite uncanny. Again, yesterday I was introduced to a new client and ... whaddyaknow ... an ex Mckinnon High lad. So, with my curiosity aroused I've found your website. I attended from 1962 through to 1968 (I repeated year 12) . My sister Janice (Holland) would have started in 1959. My only claim to fame is that I was the "Highest Grossing Ticketseller" (fundraiser) for the then-proposed Assembly Hall. (I achieved this, by the way, because we lived at the E.Brighton end of the school catchment, and this was virgin territory for an equally virginal student flogging tickets out there in the suburbs).
Andrew Dickens acd63 at hotkey.net DOT au Came across this by accident: didn't think website exsisted. I used to attend macca high, as i know it, left in 1980, I think. Went to Valkstone primary reunion while ago now, met up with ex macca boys and girls had a great day. Geez, love to know what happen to all the gang and teachers back then. Was in Paul Cochrane's class so think it was 1980? I do know however that I missed out on my reunion and heard later on that people were trying to contact me....now living on Gold Coast single dad with 13 yo son but one thing I will always remember is the wonderful gang/ staff at the best school I ever attended.
