DISCOVERING CHINA

a Web Site for Access Asia schools

maintained at
McKinnon Secondary College

There are many places on the Internet where you can find information about China. Some of this information ranges from that provided by the official Chinese Internet Site - CERNET.

CERNET

It takes a while to navigate CERNET and its sites, but it's worth it. Like any official government sponsored information it provides a very positive view of China. CERNET has a China Home Page (in Chinese). On it you can find links to a number of sites ranging from The Silk Road to Chinese Universities

Universities

Many universities around the world specialise in providing information on countries. In Australia a good starting point for finding out information about China is at the Faculty of Asian Studies at the Australian National University. It provides guidelines for getting the necessary software for reading Chinese characters on Netscape and in Eudora. For senior students a good starting point for finding out information about China is at the ANU's Coombs index of China sites on the internet run by Dr T.Matthew Ciolek.

One of the main American university sites on China is called the China News Digest Information Database. This is produced at the University of Maryland. A slow but really interesting site is maintained by Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. This site has maps, units of work, pictures and lots of links to other sites. Here you can find their rules for conduct of classes! They include:

CLASS CONDUCT: In an effort to promote an atmosphere of learning, there will be no eating or chewing gum in class. Student participation is encourage, but this excludes private conversation and whispering!
