Assessment & Reporting Policy
Reporting is done with 'Rupert' - McKinnon's Reporting
Package
It is the policy of McKinnon Secondary College that the methods of assessment
should promote positive attitudes towards learning, encourage the pursuit
of excellence and contribute to access and success of student learning.
The school's assessment practices will be based on collaborative decision
making involving students parents and teachers.
Assessment should:

Include a variety of methods to encourage students to reach achievable
goals.

Provide relevant information about the variety of learning situations used
to assist students to experience success.

Develop a cumulative record and so reflect the dynamic nature of learning.
Assist in the diagnosis of student strengths and weaknesses.

Provide students with the opportunity to participate in setting and assessing
subject and individual goals, and to participate in self-assessment activities.
Learning Area teams have the responsibility to:

Develop units of work with progressively achievable goals.

Ensure uniformity in graded tasks for each subject/unit at each level.
Classroom teachers have the responsibility to:

Ensure that students have a clear understanding of the subject/unit goals
and, in particular, of the nature, quality and quantity of work required,
when work is due to be completed, and the criteria for assessment
-
Implement units of work and in consultation with students, use a variety
of strategies and techniques for gathering information on progress which
caters for the range and qualities of student learning.
Students have a responsibility to:

Provide the required work for assessment.

Meet requirements of the units of work within the given time line.

Reflect upon their strengths and weaknesses in response to self and teacher
assessment.
Reporting Policy
The Reporting Policy of McKinnon Secondary College will reflect the principles
of the Assessment Policies. Reporting to students and parents will clearly
communicate the achievements of students and will provide recommendations
to assist students' future learning. It will foster cooperation and encourage
communication between parents, teachers and students concerning student
progress.
Reporting should:

Take place on a regular basis. Written reports will be provided at the
end of each semester; interviews with students and parents will occur twice
a year and be arranged at other times as required.

Be private communication between the student, teacher and parent.

Indicate what has been achieved by the student in the reporting period
in relation to the unit/subject goals.

State the strengths and weaknesses of the student and include recommendations
for learning.

Use constructive language and avoid statements about a student that could
be used to his or her detriment.

Be communicated using language which is clear, specified and appropriate
to the program and subject/unit.
