Mail Merge

using Word for Windows, and Excel

While mail merge is not prescribed for any particular ITA outcome, it can be very useful in some outcomes.  For example, in Unit 4 Outcome 1, you be rash enough to want to print individual membership renewal forms using data from Excel.

Here are some documents that can get you going with mail merge, in Word 2000 and Word 2003.  There are also some more advanced merge tutorials for when you get a little more adventurous.

All are in Word format.

Basic mail merge with Word 2000

Basic mail merge with Word 2003

Sample data for use with the above 2 tutorials (.XLS)

Advanced merge features, part 1: how to embed merge codes in IF..THEN..ELSE structures, and how to format numeric merge fields in Word. Very painful stuff.

Advanced merge features, part 2: advanced IF statements, comparing field values. Even more painful.

Tip - DON'T use Excel and mailmerge when you want to print out reports for multiple records! Use a database! That's what they DO!
