Model United Nations

The 14th - 20th June 2015 marked International Refugee Week. McKinnon Secondary College in cooperation with the UNAA Victoria hosted a Model UN Conference to raise student awareness on the topic Refugees: Rights and Risks.

50 McKinnon students from Year 9 to 12 and four teams from Noble Park and Keysborough Secondary College walked in the shoes of diplomates and participated in a day’s conference representing a country that they had researched in several hours of preparation. They presented their countries’ positions and negotiated resolutions, decided on amendments and voted on the resolutions of the day. The final resolution was put to a vote and and accepted.

All these presentations and negotiations were conducted with formal language requirements and the procedures of a UN assembly. Students were very well prepared, participated with amazing interest and skill and praise from the General Secretary of the day, Ian Dunn, and the UN team lead by Conal Thwaite, but also observing teachers, confirmed the great educational value of this event.

Congratulations to all participating students and share your experience to raise awareness for this world issue!
