Athletics All Schools Knockout Championships

On Thursday the 10th of September a group of students from years 7 and 8 competed in the Victorian All Schools Knockout Championship. Held at the Mecca of Victorian athletics, the Lakeside Stadium, the championships featured schools from around the state, both metropolitan and regional.

McKinnon entered one boy and girl team in the junior division of the championships. Each team consisted of five people, Arwin Verdnik, Emma Hatting, Genevieve O’Brien, Gemma Strangio and Kylie Wei for the girls and Sam Kristensen, Jason Clayton, Jackson Hannah, Will Sharp and Xavier Verdnik for the boys. We were also joined by an injured Lucas Thompson, who was enlisted to assist with the results of each race. Each team competed in the 100m, 800m, long jump, hurdles, shot put and javelin events and the 4x200m relay. Everyone from McKinnon performed with distinction, with the boys placing 5/23 and the girls 15/24, but unfortunately neither the boys or the girls progressed to the national final.

Overall it was an exhilarating experience: pitting ourselves against some of the best junior athletes in Victoria and racing on the dazzling blue track that was made even more spectacular by the warm and sunny weather. Congratulations to each of the students who competed on the day and a big thank you to Miss Carter and Miss Pemberton for organising our participation and chaperoning the team on the day.
