Senior Stage Band - Glen Eira Youth Orchestra 5th August, 2018


 Each year the Glen Eira Youth Orchestra and our Senior Stage Band join forces to provide an evening of vast musical experiences. This year, on the 5th of August, this partnership was renewed at the Glen Eira Town Hall.

 The Glen Eira Youth Orchestra was founded in 2015 by ex McKinnon students after the successful Orchestra tour of Iceland in 2014, in the aim to help provide students with the continuation of  learning and playing in an orchestra outside of school. Under the baton of Anthony Brookes , the ensemble was born, and since then, they have held many concerts showcasing the musical talent of the young community.

 In the Winter Showcase this year, GYO presented the works of celebrated composers such Edvard Grieg (”In the Hall of the Mountain King’’),  Felix Mendelssohn (“The Hebrides”), Jacques Offenbach (“Orphee Aux Enfers”) and Jean Sibelius (“Finlandia”).

 The concert also featured former student Misha Machlak’s composition “Fantasia Opus 1 for String Orchestra”, a flute ensemble run by the flute section,  and current year 12 student Gabi Basman, performing one of his VCE Music Performance program pieces, the “Clarinet Concerto No. 1” 2nd mvt, by Carl Maria Von Weber.


The McKinnon Stage Band complemented these classical array with a set of jazz, soul and contemporary music. The Ensemble performed “The Fire Within”, “This is it”, “Red Zone” and “Toccata” featuring, James Hardy on piano ; Additionally, Yael Zamir took an extended solo in “Be Cool”, along with an adventurous guitar rendition from Jonathan Fletcher;
It was another fruitful musical endeavour for the Senior Stage Band, and on behalf of all involved, we’d like to thank Mr Dmitry Serebrianik for his patience and efforts running morning and after-school rehearsals, the Glen Eira Youth Orchestra and their conductor Tony Brookes for their efforts and fantastic performance, and all the parents and music aficionados who supported the two ensembles on the night.
