International Students
McKinnon Secondary College is a large coeducational and multicultural college of over 2,700 students. The college is located 12 km south east from the city and is well served by both train and bus. The college was established in 1954 and the international programme has been operating since 2001. McKinnon Secondary College welcomes students from many different cultures and backgrounds and recognises and values the contribution international students make to the life of the school. Most international students come from China, South Korea, Vietnam and a variety of other Asian countries.
The College has a long and proud tradition of academic excellence, which attracts high quality international students eager to enhance their opportunity to go on to university. The College takes pride in valuing achievement and encouraging a strong work ethic. The majority of our students aspire to and achieve entry to university.
As we receive numerous applications, we usually interview students prior to accepting them.
International students at McKinnon continue the Colleges proud tradition of academic excellence. Over the past ten years 55% of our international students have achieved an ATAR score above 90. In 2022 eleven students completed their VCE studies. 64% achieved a score above 90 while 73% achieved a score above 80. The highest score was 99.25. (College Dux)
The College curriculum is based on traditional subject disciplines enabling students to maximise their subject choice in later years. Currently we offer over 30 VCE subjects.
The College offers an extensive instrumental music programme providing a range of bands, orchestras and choirs, culminating in the annual Winter Concert held at Monash University. Drama and musical productions are also a regular feature of the College calendar.
International students are encouraged to participate in all these aspects of College life, including debating, Cultural Diversity Week, extensive sport programme, Duke of Edinburgh Award, subject-based competitions, as well as camps and excursions at each level.
The College has undertaken an extensive building programme in recent years and includes designated Year 7 classrooms, the Alan Lawrence Lecture Theatre, a Senior School Centre and extensive landscaped areas. To view more of the school please visit our website's School Tour page here.

The nearest railway station to the College is McKinnon which is on the Frankston rail line. The McKinnon area was developed in the post WWII period and housing is mostly detached single story dwellings with front and rear gardens. The area is a quiet residential area that is well-served by local shops on McKinnon Road and the major shopping strip on Centre Road, Bentleigh, which has a wide variety of retail shops and services.
