Winter Showcase - Glen Eira Youth Orchestra with Senior Stage Band

It was a tranquil Sunday evening at the Glen Eira Town Hall when the McKinnon Senior Stage Band performed at the Glen Eira Winter Showcase as a guest of the Glen Eira Youth Orchestra (GEYO) on the 30th of July.

The showcase featured a vast number of past and present McKinnon students (many having taken up leading roles in the Youth Orchestra and its affiliate bands) — a testament to the fine music program at our college.

As a featured item of the night’s festivities, the band performed an enjoyable five-piece set. A pegged highlight of the night was the band’s soulful rendition of the ballad “Always and Forever” (well-practiced from its previous performance at the Mt. Gambier Generations in Jazz Festival) that featured the amazing talents of our lead alto saxophonist Jessie Park.

It was also very rewarding to see many of the band’s own current and former members flourishing in their own right as musicians continuing to give back to the local community. This included long-time Stage Band bari sax player and talented clarinetist (among other things) Jamie Morrissey, who opened the evening most magnificently as the Orchestra’s featured soloist of von Weber’s “Concertino for Clarinet and Orchestra”.

All in all, the showcase was a wonderful opportunity to connect and reconnect with fellow (ex-)students, celebrate all our achievements (musical and otherwise), and contribute to the local and wider music community.
