9UP in the City

As part of the BYTES program in year 9, all year 9's traveled into Melbourne CBD three times early in term 1 to undertake the Year 9 Urban Project.

The first day in the city saw the students undertake a scavenger hunt. Over 300 year 9s visitied 12 different sites, scouring them for the answers to some often difficult questions. Apart from introducing the students to the layout of the city and public transport options available to get around quickly, students were encouraged to look up from their answer sheets and keep their minds open for possible topics to use for their research project.

Topics this year include capital punishment, smoking, social media addiction, body image and racism.

With topics and groups cemented, the year 9s were in the city on the second and third day observing city-goers, surveying members of the public and interviewing experts such as politicians, university lecturers and business owners relevant to their topic.

As noted in the previous edition of McKinnon News, the year 9s conducted themselves in a manner that was a credit to the school; with many members of the public contacting the school to express their admiration for the conduct of McKinnon students in the city.

The students will be presenting their findings on the nights of 23rd and 24th March at 7pm in the MERC, Year 7 Centre, Music Auditorium and the Library and all year 9 parents and family are warmly invited to attend to see the results of their students hard work.
